2013: Year of Challenge

2012 was my back to basic year. It helped me get back to who I am as a person and get certain parts of my life back on track. Sometimes it is good to go back to basics and work on the easy stuff.

2013 is my year of challenges. I am challenging myself to take it up a notch. Each month will have a different challenge.

The first challenge is the Whole 30 challenge.

I am going to do my best of eating no grains, dairy and sugar. I am going to evaluate my relationship with food. More information will be available through out the month.

What is your challenge for 2013? What are you going to do differently this year?

]This post is a long time coming. It has been a while since I have written in my blog. One of the reasons is that life got in the way. I had two decently tragic events in my life. One was kind of tragic sort of bummy. The other was devastating to the point of crushing. Death of close family members is never a fun thing. One of the fun parts about getting older is that, unless something happens to me, more and more of my older family members are going to die. Oh joy.

Well this blog isn’t supposed to be a bummer, it is supposed to be a rebirth. Time to come back up from the ashes of things not going as well as I would like and rededicate myself to love and joy. Take what I have learned from the current experiences and use them to serve.

I have a confession. I am a kind of a geek or nerd. I love Doctor Who. However this post is not about Doctor Who. It is about a concept that I enjoy from Doctor Who. It is about how time works.

A constant message during the spiritual workshops I have been to is that after taking such a workshop that my life can be turned upside down. All of the workshops have mentioned the fact that going deeper in spirituality can lead to radical life changes.

Before my life went through a radical change, I took a wonderful meditation workshop by Intuitive Mind. Nancy Rebecca lead a very fun introduction to meditation workshop. She mentioned that doing the meditation can lead to huge life changes, such as divorce, job changes, moving across country, the normal spiritual life changes. Warrior Sage mentioned that as well. So has Abraham.

Well I digress, I was doing the meditation twice a day, then I had to cut down to one a day. I couldn’t go to sleep after getting so joyed up. How do you fall asleep when feeling awesome and energized? Leave a comment if you know how.

After a month of meditating I lost a high paying job. That was a pretty big bummer. Had so many plans. Then two weeks later, my 41 year old Uncle Mike passed on. My Uncle‘s death really put the whole losing a job thing in perspective, because that was a much bigger bummer. On a scale of 1 to 10 of bummer, where 1 is a little bummer and 10 is a huge bummer, it was a million. My Uncle Mike is one of my closet family members. I love him a lot. Losing him on this life plane is very painful.

That got me to thinking about what Nancy Rebecca said about life going crazy after starting this meditation. When being told this I always thought about a cause and effect relationship. I start to meditate and then stuff starts happening.

However I cannot believe that me beginning meditation causes my Uncle’s death. I do not believe I have the power to kill people with just the power of mediation, yet. Just kidding. I also do not believe that my spiritual actions can cause anything to happen in other people’s lives. Spirit isn’t going to cause nearly 100 people to lose their jobs and kill a person just to teach me a lesson.

This leads me to my wibbily wobbly timey whimey theory. For some reason I was drawn to that meditation class. Which was interesting because I was not feeling the need to take a class. I still have my spiritual hubris mode of not needing to learn anything more thing going on. Since time isn’t just a straight line, I believe that without a shadow of a doubt that my spirit knew that a tough time was coming up and lead me to a practice that would help me get out of the funk that tough time would cause.

I have started to meditate again and I feel the cloud lifting. Life has a lot of ups and downs. Events that you do not want to happen will happen. How you react to them and how back you come back to love is your practice. It has taken me a few months to come back to love after my Uncle’s death. If it wasn’t for my spirit giving me some new tools, who knows how much longer it would have taken.

When you feel the desire to take a class or workshop, and then your life goes down the drain, take a moment to thank your higher self. Your higher self guided you to your teachings to provide you with tools to help you go through the rough waves of your life.

10 Reason I Love Toastmasters

I have been a Toastmaster for just over two years. I really enjoyed my time there. I have grown a lot as a person during my time as a Toastmaster.

Toastmasters International
Toastmasters International (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
  1. Every meeting is different: Even though the meetings are structured, no two meetings are the same. I am highly entertained once a week. I look forward to going to meetings even when I do not have a role. I have no idea what I am going to learn or how I am going to be entertained.
  2. Everyone is so supportive: Everyone at a Toastmaster meeting is there for one reason. To improve their speaking. They know how scary it is to get in front of a group of strangers and speak your mind. They will support you with your development.
  3. Plenty of laughs: Probably the most surprising thing about Toastmasters is how much I laugh when I am there. There are plenty of funny speeches and funny moments.
  4. Noticing my improvement: I love noticing how much I have improved during my speeches. I have recorded myself practicing my speeches and putting them on Youtube. I haven’t in a while, but I will soon. I was asked to speak somewhere. I decided to do the Power of Words speech. I looked at the video I put up on Youtube. I was embarrassed by on all of the little things I did during my speech. I am a lot better now and I still have plenty of room for improvement.
  5. Watching other people improve: When I first joined Toastmasters there were a group of people who didn’t speak often. In fact, they were a member of multiple groups and used the other group to do their speeches. After I was a member for a year, I understood why. It is so much fun to watch people go from being terrified of speaking to being good to great speakers. The transformation is amazing. So much joy in watching other people improve.
  6. Helping other people improve: Either from giving good feedback or being a good role model, having the knowledge that have something to do with people’s improvement amazes me. I am humbled by the experience. I remember one time as Toastmaster one of the members had a problem with a Table Topic. A Table Topic is an impromtu speech, where a question is asked and the person answer the question. I had the inspiration to ask the person up a second time and asking him a very easy question that he knew. Just going up there in front of people and being able to speak with confidence helped him. He said so himself. That felt good.
  7. Learning how to give feedback: Learning how to give feedback in a way that helps a person is a very good skill to have. Every speech in Toastmasters is followed by an evaluation by a member. Some people find this much more scary than giving an actual speech.
  8. Chance to see amazing speeches: Some speeches I have seen have made me cry, laugh out loud, be amazed by the person or inspired to great action. People are talented and being able to watch the talented people do their thing is awesome.
  9. Gaining confidence in other areas of my life: Giving interviews, getting interviewed on podcasts, talking to potential clients, talking to people in general. I am much more confident in all aspects of my life due to Toastmasters. I also sound more confident because I don’t use as many, “uhs, likes, so’s, and’s” and other verbal crutches.
  10. Ability to take up a leadership position: In Toastmasters you have a chance to work on your leadership skills. I have been a VP of Membership, Secretary and President. Soon I will have the hardest job, which is VP of Education. I look forward to stretching myself and growing as a leader.

Toastmasters has made and is making a huge impact on me. I am a much better and more dynamic speaker because of Toastmasters. Where else can I grow, have fun for less than $100 a year? If you are looking to improve yourself, I highly recommend Toastmasters.

Live an Amazing 2012 by Scripting What You Want

Do you want to live the best 2012 you have ever lived? Do you want amazing success in your life? Do you want to actually have the year you want to live?

After making the decision to say “YES!” to all of the questions, the next step is to write down what you want.

Script your life!

Write down your 2012 year like it was a movie script. Well not exactly like a movie script. You do not need that format. All you need to do is write down the year you want to live. The important part is to have fun. Have fun when you are writing down the life you want to live in 2012.

Write down what you want to accomplish, how you will feel when you accomplish what you want, how it will smell, how it will look like, how it will sound and how you are celebrating your wonderful life.

Notice what is not there? Nowhere did I say, “Write what you do not want.” You already know what you do not want, why put more of your energy into what you do not want. No reason to write down, “I do not want to be ______” or “I want a better _______” or “I would change _______ about my life.” Be bold enough to claim what you want! Just write it down. You know you want to!

Use Theme to Make 2012 Great

Where’s the beef? I’m lovin’ it. Finger licking good. Dude, you gotta get a Dell? Choice of a new generation. Everybody needs a little KFC. Every kiss begins with Kay. Napa know how.

The above are all examples of short sweet statements that companies use to get you to buy their products. They work because they are short and sweet. Plus they display them anywhere they can to get it stuck in your head.

It is very effective marketing and it is time to use that marketing to your advantage. When it comes to your 2012, create a theme. The theme of your 2012 should be a short and simple statement. One of my most successful clients used, “Woman of action.” Simple and too the point. She used that slogan over and over again and became that woman of action she wanted to be.

When choosing a theme, decide on what you want to work on and how it excites you. The exciting part is very important. The theme should at least be as exciting as getting a Big Mac. You want to be energized every time you think, say or read your theme. If you are making a 2012 scrapbook or vision board, put the theme on top. Use it to keep you inspired and motivated.

My theme is “Back to the Basics.” I am picking three areas of my life that I am focusing on in 2012. Three basic areas. My health, finances and home are going to be energized in 2012. Last year it was “Ripples to Tidal Waves.” I made big changes with that theme and made big leaps in my life and business. Now it is time to get the basics down to create a bigger base so that I can create a bigger structure! 2012 is an amazing year. Ride the Wave! (That would be a good theme, you can have it, free of charge.)

What is your theme for 2012?

2012 is the Best Year YET

Make the decision that 2012 is the best year of your life. If you want to live the best year of your life it makes it a lot easier when you make the decision that is going to happen. Mark it down on your calendar, write it on your mirror, make the 2012 is going to be amazing vision board, and shout it out from the rooftop. It is time to make the decision that 2012 is going to be a wonderful magical year.

You will be surprised by the power of making the decision that 2012 is going to be the best. That is where the magic happens. You when decide on having an amazing future by making the present the best it can be. Be bold and take control of your life.

Lets go 2012! The best year of your LIFE!

Joy is in the Journey

My last blogtalked about the differences between creating projects instead of goals. Today I am going to go deeper into the aspect of the goals being destination focused. Goals are destination focused. Living your life going from goal to goal to goal, is

Deutsch: Ein Torhüter in einem Jugendspiel in ...
Image via Wikipedia

telling yourself that you will only be happy until when you have completed the goal. Soon you will be looking back at your life wondering where all the time went and why you spent so little of it enjoying yourself.

If you view your goal like taking a vacation then the joy of your vacation would be getting to the end point. Which of course means that your endpoint is at home. If that is the case, why even go on vacation? That is because the fun of the vacation is the stuff in between leaving home and going back that is the point. The memories, the sights, the sounds, and the good times are the reason you go on vacation.

Switching to a more project oriented viewpoint or direction if you go by Richard Bandler‘s The Secrets of Being Happy, is that you look at your life more about how you got there. You will avoid the empty feeling that can come from reaching your goal. The, “well I did it, but now what?” You will be ready to take on the next new project.

Oh the joys of life! Of course this is build up for my next blog about building your wonderful 2012. Look forward to it. I command you! Just kidding. Also remember, don’t stop believing and hold on to the feeling.

Project vs Goals

I love reading and I love learning. Reading new books allow new perspectives.  While reading, Supercoach: 10 Secrets to Transform Anyone’s Life, I had one of those experiences.

The book talked about using the word project instead of the word goal. There is a lot of power in words. Think to yourself of a goal that you want to accomplish. Notice how the goal is in the future and has a failure date. Turn that goal into a project and notice how those feeling shifts. Project is something that you are working on now. Just switching the word from goal to project takes what you are working on from the future and puts it in the present.

You will also notice that it takes away the failure date. You might have dates you would like to complete the project, however a project can go on if you do not make a date. You would have to create a new goal if you do not make it. Using the word project breaks the contract of disappointment.

I am looking forward to playing around with this idea more in 2012! I am excited for next year as I am excited for today! It is all part of my projects.

What are some goals that you are going to change into projects?
