I was having lunch with a colleague of mine the other day and he asked me how my latest project was going. After lamenting about how much I have left to accomplish. I felt compelled to add something that made me feel really strong. I said, “Never underestimate the power of a great team behind, beside and in front of you.”
As “Father’s Day” has come and gone and I am knee deep into the process of publishing a book based on some of my father’s infinite wisdom he imparted on me when I was young. I can’t help but think about the day he retired for the last time (and yes, he has retired twice). I was asked to speak and before I uttered a single word I looked out over the audience and saw the faces of the people my father had touched and those who were with him along the way during this part of his journey. I’m not sure what possessed me to say this, but as I thought about him and where I was in life, I said. “Each of us walks a path that at times that was paved by those who come before us.”
So as I am knee deep into publishing this book I wanted to say “thank you” to everyone who has helped make this dream possible. Without you I am nothing but words in my head poured onto a page. You have saved me from myself and given me tough love when I needed it. You have shared with me words of wisdom and thoughts of hope. Patted me on the back for a job well done and picked me up when I’ve fallen down. It is in doing this project together I truly appreciate what a team really is. Many people think that writers just write and publish stuff and it’s done. We are this “TEAM of One.” We sit at our desks pulling words out of thin air, splashed onto a page to be read by the masses.
We are only as strong as our team is deep. A depth that cannot be measured in numbers, but in commitment to the goal and pride in the finished product. Words will never express how I feel about everyone who has helped bring “The Art of Working for Yourself” to life. I appreciate you now more than ever before. For I know your true talents and worth. They are more than the skills you shared with me at the beginning of this project. We are now bonded on a level I could have never imagined and I am grateful I know you all.
I know that there is much work to still be done. From marketing to sales I know the real work is about to begin. But I wanted to stop for a quick minute to smell the roses and smile knowing that I have the best team EVER. You have shown me what “The Art of Working for Yourself” can do. I love you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for making all of this happen.
